Long-Distance Learning Catching

Without ever leaving the campus of Indiana University
of Pennsylvania, ...
... students and faculty members have traveled to
universities as far away as India and South Africa
to classrooms at West Chester and East Stroudsburg
universities in Pennsylvania.
Video-conferencing technology has provided IUP students
with real-time video and audio interaction with professors
and students across the state and around the world.
IUP sociology professor Dr. Robert
Heasley teaches a graduate class Wednesday evenings
in both Harrisburg and Indiana. His class, Social
Inequality, is taught using video-conferencing technology.
Heasley drives from Indiana to the
Dixon Center, the headquarters for the State System
of Higher Education in Harrisburg, every other week
to meet with each classroom of students.
"The experience has been very
positive," Heasley said. "It really allows
us to connect and enhance the discussion process."
His class of about 15 students sits
facing a large television screen at a U-shaped table
with microphones in front of each person. Small cameras
attached to the walls and ceiling transmit their picture
to the other class.
David Lind, director of IUP's Center
of Video Technology, has seen video conferencing become
more integrated into IUP's curriculum in the past
years as faculty members have been more willing to
experiment with the equipment.
"When I started here in 1995,"
Lind said, "video conferencing was in its infancy.
We received a grant from the State System of Higher
Education as seed money to lease video-conferencing
equipment."
Lind worked to set up a network for
IUP's College of Education, whose former dean wanted
to establish a way for faculty to observe student
teachers in the classrooms.
"We began by experimenting
with the Mill Creek School District in Erie, Pa. Our
College of Education majors were able to observe other
classes and learn teaching techniques, and were also
able to talk to Mill Creek teachers and administrators
without having to send buses of students over there,"
said Lind. "The experiment with Mill Creek was
a huge success."
