One year after the first experiment
with video conferencing, IUP's College of Education
was awarded a federal grant to do a research study
on using video conferencing to observe student teachers.
"We were the only institution
at that time researching the avenue of supervising
student teachers in the field."
The State System of Higher Education
has established its own private video network for
its 14 member universities across the state.
Currently, IUP primarily uses its
three-year-old video conferencing equipment to link
with SSHE universities.
"Here at IUP I see its growth
in the doctoral-level programs. As the only SSHE university
to have a doctoral program, we can now offer it to
other schools. Video conferencing is becoming part
of a blended course of instruction."
Some students have yet to see the
benefits of classes conducted through video conferencing.
As a graduate student studying sociology
in Heasley's class, Michelle Stagmer prefers a normal
classroom setting.
"It's weird. From the consensus
of the class, I don't think many people like it,"
Stagmer said.
"The microphones pick up so much
sound that everything comes across so loud. Just moving
your books around causes so much noise, and it's hard
because we are not allowed to have any side discussions.
"It's good for a conference,
but for a class it's really difficult."
Tara Shuster, a graduate student in
sociology, agreed and said that when she registered
for the class, the sociology department did not tell
her about the video-conferencing format.
"We don't have a lot of choices
as to the classes we can take. So it wouldn't stop
me from taking that kind of class, but I think they
should make people aware if that's how it's going
to be."
IUP only has one room in which it
operates video conferencing, but faculty members in
the sociology department are working on a technology
grant application that would allow them to purchase
the equipment for classes in their department so they
don't have to relocate their classes across campus
to Stouffer Hall.
"We want to install the equipment
in McElhaney Hall," Heasley said. "The more
accessible it is for faculty, the more likely it is
that they will use it."
According to Lind, IUP's video-conferencing
technology is also used for faculty and administration
meetings. The equipment can also be utilized by outside
businesses or public organizations. Anyone interested
can contact IUP's department of continuing education.
